Prompt Engineering for Midjourney

Prompt engineeringMidjourney

You've probably heard people talking about "prompt engineering" at length. The truth is, it's actually quite simple – you just need to apply the right methods and read the documentation a bit!
In this article, we're diving straight into the heart of the matter: prompting for Midjourney and understanding how AI is affected by the different parameters we give it. It's not rocket science.
You're familiar with the concept of "seeds," which we'll be using here. Seeds reduce the randomness in AI-generated content. In this case, they allow us to give the AI the same starting point, helping us understand how different prompts impact the results.
For example, let's say we want to prepare the best possible prompt for creating flat design logos that are vectorial, classy, and minimalist.
Our very first prompt:

logo of a dog refuge, flat design, sober, minimalist, white background
The idea here is that we're going to try to lock the seed. We make our first generation:

So we'll tag our generations like this: logo of a dog refuge, flat design, sober, minimalist, white background --seed 3139898994

Step 1: Refining the Graphic Style

Let's explore different stylistic directions while keeping the same seed: logo of a dog refuge, flat design, clean lines, vector art, single color blue, white background --seed 3139898994
This prompt further specifies the graphic style with "clean lines" and "vector art," and introduces a color constraint.

Step 2: Playing with Symbols and Composition

logo of a dog refuge, silhouette of dog and human, flat design, sober, minimalist, white background --seed 3139898994
Here, we're guiding Midjourney toward a specific composition that includes both a dog and a human.

Step 3: Exploring Typographic Variations

logo of a dog refuge named "Safe Haven", modern typography, flat design, sober, minimalist, white background --seed 3139898994
This variation introduces a fictional name and emphasizes typography.

Analyzing the Results

By comparing the four generations (the original prompt plus the three variations), you can observe how each added or modified element affects the final result. This is precisely where the value of seeds lies: they allow you to isolate the impact of each prompt change.

Advanced Tips for Optimizing Your Midjourney Logos

  1. Be specific about shapes: Explicitly mention "circular logo," "square logo," or "horizontal logo" according to your needs.
  2. Specify the color style: "Monochromatic," "duotone," "gradient," or "complementary colors" guide Midjourney toward specific palettes.
  3. Use stylistic references: Add "in the style of Bauhaus" or "inspired by Scandinavian design" to guide the aesthetic.
  4. Don't forget the technical aspects: "Printable," "scalable," or "high contrast" are indicators that produce more functional logos.

Limitations to Keep in Mind

As mentioned in the documentation, seeds are not a miracle solution. They cannot:
  • Save a specific style between different sessions
  • Guarantee identical results if other parameters change
  • Work reliably in Turbo mode (Turbo mode doesn't play well with seeds...)
By applying this experimental approach, you can gradually refine your skills and develop a solid intuition to get exactly what you want from Midjourney, whether it's for flat design logos or any other type of visual creation.
